Nowadays, home wireless network protection is important part of modern people lives. In this article I would tell you the most important information about protecting your WiFi network with help of password. There will be different manufacturer’s routers examples, encryption types and what you should do to change wireless network password.
If you want to protect network not intended for home use (enterprise network for example), this article won’t be very useful, because contains information only about password protection. Strong password provides sufficient protection level for home wireless network. Chance, that someone decided to hack your WiFi and waste a lot of time and effort, is very low. You could hide network name or set MAC addresses filtration, but, in practice, this will cause discomfort when using your wireless network.
Why it’s so important to protect your network in age, when we have favorable and unlimited tariffs. That’s because new clients is new load on your network. If you have cheap router, high load can be reason of data transfer interference. Moreover, connected device can get access to files shared in local network and to router configurations, if you didn’t change default admin panel password.
Strong password and modern encryption are the best protection for your wireless network. Better to set up all security settings when configuring your router for the first time. We recommend to change your router password from time to time.
So you decided to set password for your wireless network, let’s find out how it can be done step-by-step. Moreover, you can change administrator panel password.
What encryption method I should choose?
When installing, you will be able to choose WiFi network encryption method. Recommend you to use only WPA2 — Personal with AES.
There is one exception, when you can’t use this method — if you have not modern devices, which don’t support this encryption method. In this case you could try WPA with TKIP encryption. Don’t use WEP! This is very old and unsecured protocol, so it can be easily hacked.
WPA — Personal protocol with AES encryption is the best choice for home wireless network as was mentioned above. Minimum number of password symbols is 8. It must contains Latin letters, digits and symbols. Don’t forget about case-sensitivity of password.
Nowadays, there are a lot of different router models, so here I would show you instruction for the most popular manufacturers.

Don’t forget to save new password somewhere, otherwise you will check it in router settings or on PC.
Connect your router to device, which will be used to access settings. It can be done via cable or wireless. Open 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.0.1 in your web-browser. Type default credentials in appeared inputs. In the most cases it is “admin” for both.
Open Wireless tab and get in Wireless Security. Select WPA/WPA2 — Personal. Choose WPA2-PSK with AES. Wireless Password input is place, where you need specify your new password.
First steps are the same as was mentioned in TP-Link part, but use 192.168.1.1 address only.
Here should be Wireless tab, where you need set these settings:
- Authentication Method: WPA2 — Personal
- WPA Encryption: AES
- WPA Pre-Shared Key: Type here your new network password
Click Apply button to save changes.
First step: connect to your router through browser (addresss usually 192.168.100.1)
Go to WLAN – WLAN Basic Configuration.
Check settings like in the previous paragraphs or like in the screenshot below:
Click Apply button and reboot your router.
In this case address is 192.168.0.1. Open Wireless Settings and set up security settings as on this picture:
Don’t forget to save changes and reboot your router.
As you may have noticed, all routers have similar actions to change security settings. Main difference is tab names, so you can try mentioned above methods with certain manufacturer’s router not listed in this article.
What if my wireless network doesn’t work correctly after security settings changes?
Sometimes router owners deal with troubles after password change. Every platform has its own error message, but the symptoms are the same — devices don’t want to connect to network.
Try to remove network from list of remembered connections and connection to it again. Here is article how it can be done on MAC and Windows.
Sometimes it’s just that your devices don’t support WPA2 protocol, so it’s necessary to set WPA protocol with TKIP encryption method or buying of modern devices.
