Sometimes you need to disallow access to famous social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. Maybe for your employees.
There are a lot of ways how it can be done. First way, how you can disallow access to it, is usage of special programs (antivirus, firewall, hosts file).

Moreover, you can use your router to disallow access to social websites. This article would show you how it can be done using Tp-Link router as example. Main advantage of this method is that every device connected to your wireless network can’t get on blocked website.

There are 2 control types, which can be used to block websites access. In this article we would use “Access Control” because “Parental Control” was made for people, who want disallow access for their kids.

Most of the home wireless routers have the same control panel, so if you use popular model, you don’t need to worry about interface differences.

Disallow access to social networks using Tp-Link router

To block Facebook, twitter or other websites, we should enter in router’s configuration panel.

Type your router’s address in web-browser URL bar and press enter. Address can be found on special sticker or on the Internet.

Special window will appear. Type in it default Tp-Link credentials — “admin” in both fields. If you’ve changed credentials, you should use login and password which were set by you. If you forget them, reset your router.

Get in settings.

Create a list of unwanted sites.

Click on “Access Control” in router’s configuration panel and then on “Target”. Firstly, we will make a list of unwanted resources.

There should be “Add new” button. Press it.

Next to “Mode” you should choose Domain Name.

It’s necessary to specify description for rules in field for description. You can type something like “blocking FB”.

In input for domain you should specify unwanted website addresses.

Well done, now we have website’s list. You can add another rule.

Add necessary devices

Enter in “Access Control” and then in “Host”, where you should click “Add New”.

Some devices already have their own IP addresses, which you can use to identify device and disallow access to social networking sites and other website, but in these purposes better to use MAC address. Usually, devices change their addresses after reconnect.

Choose “MAC Address” in “Mode”.

In “Host Description” enter some human readable description, like “blocking PC”, to identify this device. It’s important you to know what device is chosen when looking on name.

Type device’s MAC-address in specified for it field.

There are two ways how it can be found:

All wireless network clients can be found in DHCP Clients List.

Moreover, it can be found out from device’s settings.

After necessary device MAC address was specified, you should apply done changes. Save done changes.

We‘ve already created block resources list and devices list, so last action is combining both of them.

Enable websites block on Tp-Link router

Enter in “Rule” tab and enable control.

Don’t change other parameters.

Save done changes.

After that, press on “Add New”

In “Rule Name” type name, which will be used to identify this rule.

“Host” is input, in which you should specify devices from previous steps.

In “Target” you need to choose websites list, which we created in previous steps.

Moreover, you can set block time. Don’t change other parameters. Then click “Save”.

After you’ve done these steps, rule is applied.

You don’t need to reboot router to apply rules. Social networking sites, which you blocked, can be accessed from browsers of devices you added in rule, but they can use mobile application to bypass block.
